Description

The independent transport videos cameras returned to Kirkby Stephen and Brough at Easter 2022 to record the excellent rally and running days. The event is now known as the “Cumbria Easter Rally” and is again  ‘under new management’!  The event was just as good as ever and coupled with some decent spring weather, it was a joy to attend and bring you this DVD programme.  We filmed the event from early Saturday, 16th April, until the close of events and all day on Sunday the 17th.  Our cameras take you around the area, filming at the best locations and also ride on a number of the classic buses and coaches attending the rally. This event brings the past to life as the buses and coaches run through the pretty towns of Kirkby Stephen and Brough.  There is a vast array of vehicle types including the Leyland Titan, Atlantean, Tiger, Leopard and National.  From the AEC stable there is the AEC Regal, Routemaster and Reliance.  Bristol buses and coaches and an Albion Nimbus were also represented, not to mention other types in the shape of Daimler, Optare, Volvo and Bedford - the list goes on!  Bus fleets featured include Blackpool, Doncaster and Darwen Corporations, Cleveland Transit, Crosville, Northumbria, Ribble, West Yorkshire, Hebble, Merseyside PTE and London Transport.  Scottish fleets are also represented with vehicles from Strathtay, Western and Midland Scottish, Clydeside, Kelvin, Lowland Omnibuses and Highland.  Also featured are a good number of independents. Our filming locations in Brough included the main Rally site, New Road and Main Street.  In Kirkby Stephen we filmed along North Road, Market Street, Victoria Square and outside both the West and East railway stations.  All of these locations are linked by rides on the different buses and coaches that we travelled on over the two days of the event.

On the Saturday we rode on 1049 (KGU 284), a former London Transport Leyland Titan PD2 7RT painted in the livery of Barton, representing a type used by that East Midlands operator.  Another vehicle painted in an alternative livery to represent a type operated by Northumbria is 369 (B693 BPU), a Leyland Olympian with an ECW coach double-decker body that began life with Eastern National.  Further rides were on LA1204 (XUS 575S), a former Strathclyde’s Buses Leyland Atlantean AN68 with an Alexander body, 39 (JTF 217F), a former Darwen Corporation Leyland Titan PD2A with an East Lancs body.  Badgerline 2098 (PWS 492S) is a Leyland Leopard PSU3E dating from 1978, but with a 1983 Plaxton C49F body that was  our final Saturday journey before setting up our cameras for the ‘Saturday Evening Road Run’.  Our first location was at Ash Fell up on the moors to capture the buses and some of the commercial vehicles passing by.  We also filmed some of the vehicles as they ran along the A685 Brough to Kirkby Stephen road as some are heading for their overnight stays.

On Sunday our cameras took rides on Merseybus 2122 (CUL 122V), a former London Transport Leyland Titan, 22 (MDT 222), an AEC Regal III with a Roe B39F body from Doncaster Corporation and MPE374 (LMS 374M), an Alexander B53F bodied Leyland Leopard from the Midland Scottish fleet.  Our final ride was on board 210 (CHH 210T), a Leyland National with a B44F body sporting the poppy red and white colours of Cumberland from its National Bus Company days. We conclude our filming at the rally site at Brough as the buses arrive and then depart for final journeys or for their homes.  We hope you have enjoyed your trip around the superb Cumbrian countryside featuring these lovely classic buses and coaches.
