Description

AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER, THIS TITLE IS DUE FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 2024.

The city of Milan has one of the largest tram systems is in the world.Housed at five depots, a fleet of more than 400 trams operate a criss-cross network of 17 routes, serving the city centre and the suburbs. As per all European systems, routes have come and gone over the last 30-years but as of 2024, with a new fleet of vehicles on their way, the Milan tramway is on the rise again, with a secure future.

Of most interest are the 1500-series Peter Witt Streetcars dating from the 1920s. 502 of these were built and remarkably, about 130 survive in regular service. Unlike Lisbon and other systems which have upgraded their old fleet, the trams here are almost original, with tradition controllers, brake gear, bogies and compressors and they are driven in very much the old-school way! They look and sound magnificent! Add the 1950s built 4600 and 4700-series articulated cars and trams from the 1970s, 2000s and beyond and Milan just about has it all.

On top of this, most tram routes operate from 4am to 2am daily and with that, 96-year old trams work 22-hour days!

This programme provides an introduction to Milan's system. Most routes are featured here with extended footage of routes 1, 5, 10, 19 and 33 - worked by the Witt cars, plus the 4600 and 4700-series cars and brief visits to Messina and Baggio depots.
