Riding the ROG Loco Move #4 - Cab Ride: Carlisle to Kilmarnock via the GSW, Dumfries and New Cumnock
This is a cab ride on board Class 37/7, 37884 'Cepheus' from Carlisle to Kilmarnock via the scenic and lesser known alternative GSW route from Carlisle to Glasgow. Operated by ROG, the working here was a light engine move for an EMU move the following day.
Filmed in August 2021, the journey begins just south of Carlisle on the WCML and passing through Carlisle station, we head for Gretna Junction and join the Glasgow South Western route.
The line is controlled by traditional signal boxes located at Annan, Dumfries, Holywood, Thornhill, Kirkconnel, New Cumnock and Mauchline and with a mixture of colour light and semaphore signals, we run through many miles of open fields and countryside, over numerous viaducts and through two tunnels. Hand-operated wooden level crossing gates survive at Holywood and we pass the traditional stations at Dumfries and Kilmarnock, where the journey ends.
The entire 92-mile journey is shown. Includes maps, on-screen captions and minimal narration. A thrash cam in the back cab records the loco at work and ambient sounds.
Bonus Footage: The EMU move itself is featured from the lineside, plus highlights of the return journey back to Carlisle from the cab.
