Apart from the sun, sea and sand, Bournemouth is noted for its smart fleet of Yellow Buses. In late 2005 the council owned bus fleet was taken over by the French owned company, Transdev. The livery of yellow stayed the same, although the shade changed and the blue trim changed to a dark blue and green trim. In early 2005 Joe Ward recorded the fleet at various locations in and around Bournemouth and Christchurch. New low floor Volvos and Dennis Tridents were the order of the day as well as Volvo Citybuses representing the older members of the double deck fleet, and the single deck fleet of step entrance Dennis Darts with bodywork by different manufactures.
The Independent Transport Videos cameras returned to Bournemouth in late spring 2010 to update the Yellow Bus scene. Our cameras went to many of the previous locations that were seen earlier in this programme and some new ones. As will be seen the livery has been updated and all the vehicles are turned out very smartly. The latest saloons are recorded, these being both Optare Tempo and Optare Versa vehicles. Older saloons are represented by a number of second hand low floor Dennis Darts with East Lancs, Plaxton and Wrights bodies as well as the original Yellow Buses East Lancs bodied Darts just for good measure. Look out for the Wrights Merit bodied Volvo buses (500-503), the last saloons delivered new to the former council owned Yellow Buses. There is plenty of action for you to enjoy in many locations in this picturesque part of Dorset, with this being the perfect record of a smart attractive modern fleet. You might have seen our earlier programme, 'Bournemouth Buses' which shows the fleet in operation in 2003. There is also our programme, 'Bournemouth Trolleybuses' that shows archive footage of these fine silent vehicles operating in the 1960s.
