By the mid 1970s the diesel and electric motive power fleet had been renumbered, with TOPS taking over, with the familiar Class categories. However, the fleet itself remained as varied as ever, with everything from ‘Westerns’ to ‘Deltics’ on main line services. This programme explores the network when loco hauled services still dominated.

THE EAST COAST MAIN LINE - 1977 with ‘Deltics’ at Edinburgh, Doncaster, Peterborough plus Class 47s, 46s, 40s, 31s and 44 004 ‘Great Cable’.

LONDON TERMINII - Kings Cross in 1977 with more Deltics and Liverpool Street with Class 47s, 37s and 31s on loco hauled services.

THE WESTERN MAIN LINE - in 1976 with Class 50s, 47s, 31s and Class 52 ‘Westerns’ including scenes at Reading.

THE WEST COUNTRY - Dainton Bank, Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Dawlish Warren and Dawlish plus the Saltash Bridge with a detailed look at freight and passenger workings featuring ‘Westerns’, ‘Peaks’, Class 50s and Class 25s.

CAMBRIAN SPECIAL - 24 081 & 24 063 along the Cambrian Coast in 1976.
