In the mid 1960s the North East of England possessed a remarkably varied range of steam motive power, including some designs dating back to the days of the North Eastern Railway.

This programme provides a detailed study of the final years of steam in the North East.

• 9Fs on Iron Ore trains on the steeply graded line from Tyne Dock to the steel works at Consett.
• The Branches of Northumberland - the long forgotten lines serving the Border region to the North West of Newcastle including passenger services on the line from Hexham to Keilder via Reedsmouth prior to closure in 1956, freight services on the line from Morpeth to Woodburn, and the last steam passenger train on the Woodburn Branch.
