Description

Prague's tram network is said to be one of the largest in the world. With around 800 trams, spread across eight depots, operating 33 daytime routes and ten night routes, plus Nostalgic and Historic services - and a museum, when it comes to adding up the number of vehicles operating each day, route mileage, passengers carried, frequency of service and future expansion, the system is indeed a world-leader. It's not possible to look at all of Prague's tram routes in one programme, so this introduction features the nostalgic and historic lines, as well as the Tatra cars, operating system wide.

Routes 23 & 42
Nostalgic line 23 operates from Královka to Zvonařka, a journey of about 30 minutes, a criss-cross city route, passing many of Prague's attractions and it's normally worked by the older or unrefurbished Tatras. Historic line 42 is a premium-priced circular route, running out and back to Dlabačov with a journey time of about 50 minutes. Worked by the older Tatras and the early 1900s-built Ringhoffers with up to two trailers, the 42 crosses the River Vltava four times passing many landmarks, with some fantastic sections of fast open running. Both routes are featured in detail.

The Tatras
If the Balloon car is Blackpool's iconic tram and the small yellow 4-wheeler is Lisbon's, then the red and white Tatra T3 belongs to Prague. A staggering 14,000 of this type were built, with 1,193 delivered new to Prague between 1962 and 1989. Around 400 survive in service today, many rebuilt and modernised with low-floor access, new control gear and new bodies, while retaining that iconic shape and look. The trams are seen city-wide, usually coupled in pairs and the three other classes also featured: Tatra KT8, Skoda 14T & 15T and the latest addition to the fleet - on delivery - the Skoda 52T.
