Germany's Metre Gauge Railway System
The metre gauge Harzschmalspurbahnen or HSB railway system in Germany's Harz mountain region is 140km long, running as three separate connected lines - the Brockenbahn, the Harzquerbahn and the Selketalbahn. There are 25 steam locomotives of 5 different classes. The shed at Wernigerode is the busiest steam shed in Europe.
The base of the HSB is at Wernigerode, the steam shed having a large allocation of 2-10-2 tanks, plus 0-4-4-0 Mallets. Trains run up the Brocken mountain at 1125 metres high and south through the mountains to Nordhausen. The Selketalbahn is the eastern line based at Gernrode, with the newly opened 4km branch to Quedlinburg. We look at all parts of this extensive system.
