Description

A journey around Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire through archive film.

Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire were once served by a fascinating and varied collection of railways. The main lines to London ran alongside a network of sleepy and little used branches. Volume 2 explores the East Coast Main Line and branches to Hertford and Bedford from the steam era to the present day.

Presenter Tony Furse continues on a journey around Hertfordshire using an extensive collection of archive material.

The East Coast Main Line looking at the route from Kings Cross to Potters Bar and Hitchin in the steam era along with film from the 1970s. Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Stevenage and Digswell Viaduct all feature with A4s, A1s, V2s and suburban trains.

Cross Country from Hitchin and the lines to Royston and Bedford in the 1950s and 1960s. Includes a detailed look at steam comings and goings at Bedford and the quiet intermediate stations at Cardington, Southill and Henlow Camp with passenger and freight traffic. Also featured is a DMU on the branch in the days up until closure in 1961 and a Highland Goods loco in 1964.

The Branch to Hertford with a detailed look at the line from Welwyn Garden City to Hertford and the intermediate stations at Attimore Hall Halt, Holywell Hyde Halt, Cole Green and Hertingfordbury and the end of the line at Hertford Cowbridge. The line is shown during the run of a steam special behind a Great Northern J13 tank. In addition we explore the remains of the line in recent months.
