With Steam through Russia to the Arctic and across the Urals.
The White Nights II Steam Express ran from Moscow east to the Golden Ring towns of Vladimir and Suzdal before heading northeast along the 1000 mile long line to the infamous town of Vorkuta above the arctic circle and centre of Stalin's labour camps. The train crossed the Urals to enter Siberia before returning westwards to St. Petersburg and finally to Moscow. 4,500 miles all under steam with a variety of locomotives.
Russian steam locomotive classes include the E Class 0-10-0, famous as the most numerous steam locomotive ever built with more than 11,000 examples, the L Class 2-10-0 and the LV 2-10-2 the basis of the Chinese QJ Class. Passenger types include the P36 4-8-4 and the SU 2-6-2. All these locomotives are described in this film and are shown in action.
