Our Digitally Remastered Series are bigger, better and in stunning HD for the very first time! These are the original programmes which have been put through the upscale and remastering treatment with improvements to audio, colour balance, contrast and most of all - picture quality. Some of the trains featured here were never filmed in HD or in broadcast quality. Now, for the first time - you can enjoy just that!
The narrow gauge lines in China were built to 762mm, mainly as industrial railways, but also as local railways serving remote villages in mountainous areas.
This film looks at five very different lines, starting with the Dahuichang Limestone Railway near to Beijing. We then visit the Suileng local railway with over 200km of lines north of Harbin. The Huanan Coal Railway was originally a forestry line near the Russian border, now adapted to serve remote coal mines. The Weihe Forestry Railway brings logs from the forest to the sawmill for cutting as well as providing a local passenger service.
Finally the Shibanxi local railway serves a remote mountainous region in south west China providing a passenger service, freight and coal trains as well as weekend tourist trains.
All these lines use the C2 Class 0-8-0 developed from the Polish Px48. One of these is now preserved in Wales.
