Manchester South & West
East Didsbury • Airport • Altrincham • Trafford Centre • Eccles
Our third Metrolink programme looks at trams in the South and West of the city, serving the terminals of East Didsbury, Manchester Airport, Altrincham, Trafford Centre and Eccles.
The Altrincham line is perhaps the best known and most interesting from an operational point of view, opened as Phase 1 in June 1992. Next was the Eccles line, opened in two phases and completed in July 2000. The South Manchester line and Airport line were part of Phase 3, opening fully in May 2013 and November 2014 respectively. The most recent extension from Pomona to the Trafford Centre opened in March 2020.
Each line is filmed in detail, with the terminus and key locations along the route, showing various moves. Trams run along a mixture of reserved track and on-street sections, plus former heavy rail lines and the unique section of double single-line running with heavy rail at Navigation Road is shown. Filmed summer 2026.
