In no particular order, we chose Sheffield for our first visit. This system probably doesn’t need much of an introduction. Known officially as South Yorkshire Supertram, but normally referred to as Stagecoach Supertram, this tram and tram-train network serves Sheffield and Rotherham in South Yorkshire.

The system opened in 1994/1995 with a fleet of 25 trams and it remained unchanged until 2018 and the opening of an extension to Rotherham, with the introduction of seven Class 399 tram-trains - the first of this type in the UK.

We visited Sheffield on 22nd June 2022 and with the bargain-priced £4.60 all-day ticket, travelled over the entire system. Like all UK systems, Supertram was badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and on this day services were more-or-less back to normal. On both the core yellow and blue routes a 12-minute service operated with a 60-minute service on the purple line and a 30-minute service on the tram-train line.

Included here is footage of all six terminals plus some great moves in the city centre around Cathedral. There's footage from the triangular junction at Park Square and the other junctions at Hillsborough, Meadowhall South and Gleadless Townend plus moves to/from the depot at Nunnery Square. From the serenity of Herdings Park and Crystal Peaks to the hustle and bustle of street running and passing through a major city, the Sheffield system is a great example of a successful and popular UK light rail system.

21 different trams and four tram-trains are featured including the blue and white No.120 and advert liveried 111, 116 and 118.
