Since our previous DVD programme featuring Southampton’s buses - “Southampton’s Buses 2019” the independent transport videos cameras have returned to record quite a number of changes that have occurred in the city affecting the contemporary bus scene. The main operators at the time of our filming are Go South Coast with their ‘Bluestar’ and ‘unibus’ operations and Firstbuswith their ‘City Red’ branded buses for services within the Southampton area.

Our filming has taken place during 2021 and 2022 and we have included some of the Go South Coast operations within the New Forest. The 2021 Southampton city centre locations featured include Castle Way, High and West Street, Bargate Street, Portland Terrace, Vincents Walk, Pound Tree Road, Above Bar Street, Hanover Building and the busy roads adjacent to the Central railway station. The ‘Bluestar’ fleet consists of many ADL products. Double-decker Enviro400, Enviro400MMC and Enviro400City buses dominate the fleet with a few Scania/East Lancs OmniDekkas and Scania OmniCitys added in for good measure. The single-deckers are mostly ADL200MMC buses with a small batch of dual-door Wrightbus Eclipse 2-bodied Volvo B7RLEs, which have since left the fleet. In 2021 the FirstbusHampshire & Dorsetfleet were branded as ‘City Red’ with the main vehicle type being the Wrightbus Streetlite DF with a few Wrightbus Eclipse Urban-bodied Volvo B7RLEs branded for route 3.

Our visit to the New Forest takes us to Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and Lymington. Here we see the open-top buses on the New Forest tour. They are convertible open-top East Lancs Vyking-bodied Volvo B7TLs liveried for the red, blue and green tours of the New Forest. ‘Morebus’ from Bournemouth are also seen in service and at the ‘Morebus’ Lymington depot. Locations for our 2022 visit in Southampton city centre are similar to the 2021 locations. Firstbus– ‘City Red’ has now introduced a small allocation of Wrightbus StreetDeck double-deckers for the busy route 3 which have been transferred from Firstin Leeds. They are painted in a smart new livery in the house style of First Hampshire & Dorset. Look out for 35209 (SL16 RFK) as unfortunately a few weeks after our filming this bus was destroyed by fire returning from park & ride duties at the Bournemouth Air Festival.

Our final scene is at Ringwood, on the edge of the New Forest, where we see open-top Volvo 1821 (HF54 KXT) with its ‘Morebus’ livery adapted for use on any of the three open-top New Forest tours.
