Description

The age of mechanical signalling on the National Network is drawing to a close. In this series we document the last areas of semaphore signalling and signal boxes against a backdrop of passenger and freight workings. In this programme we explore the lines from Yorkshire and North Humberside to Teesside, The Tyne Valley and Newcastle that constituted the North Eastern Region of British Railways.

The programme comprises:

  • The East Coast Main Line from Doncaster to Selby.
  • North Humberside from Gilberdyke to Hull.
  • York to Scarborough including some unusual designs at Kirkham Abbey and Weaverthorpe and archive film from Scarborough.
  • West Yorkshire with a variety of boxes at Halifax and Batley.
  • The Harrogate Loop with the semaphores and boxes including Knaresborough.
  • Teesside including the triangular junction at Norton.
  • The Esk Valley at Nunthorpe and Grosmont.
  • The branch to Bishops Auckland.
  • The Tyne Valley Line from Newcastle to Carlisle.
  • The Blyth & Tyne freight lines to the north of Newcastle.
