The age of mechanical signalling on the National Network is drawing to a close. In this series we document the last areas of semaphore signalling and signal boxes against a backdrop of passenger and freight workings. We include a detailed look at the world’s largest mechanical signal box at Shrewsbury plus the working arrangements at Worcester box.
The Programme Comprises:
The Western Main line through Cornwall - Yeovil Pen Mill - Brockenhurst - Along the South Coast including Littlehampton and Bognor Regis - Lewes to Hastings - Kent signalling including Deal, Sandwich, Canterbury West and along the Wye Valley - The Medway Valley including Maidstone, East Farleigh, Gillingham and Wateringbury, South Wales with Carbeston Road, Whitland, Ferryside, Pembrey Port, Pantyffnon and Tondu - Western Signalling at Banbury, Moreton-in-Marsh, Worcester and the surrounding lines and Ledbury - The North & West with Abergavenny and all the boxes to Craven Arms and Shrewsbury - Shrewsbury with the signal boxes at Sutton Bridge Junction, Severn Bridge Junction, Abbey Foregate and Crewe Junction. A wide range of traffic is seen from the station and boxes in and around Shrewsbury.
