Description

The Midland provided a fascinating mix of contrasts in the 1980s. While the line from St Pancras to Bedford was electrified, the section through Wellingborough to Leicester had changed relatively little since the days of steam.  In this programme we take a ride in the cab of an HST and on the way explore the railway, its traffic, stations and structures.

The programme comprises:

  • A Cab Ride from St Pancras to Leicester in the cab of an HST in the summer of 1987. Includes scenes at St Pancras and the line through the London suburbs in the 1980s and the 1970s.
  • The journey from Bedford over the summit at Sharnbrook and down the grade through Irchester to Wellingborough.
  • The semaphore signalling at Wellingborough with views of the Signal Box and yards and signalling at Finedon Road.
  • Steam and diesel traction in and around Wellingborough and Kettering in the early 1960s.
  • The journey through Market Harborough to Leicester and the junctions at Glendon and Wigston.
