This DVD programme filmed over a period from 2003 to 2017, shows some of the former Hong Kong buses in service with various operators in the United Kingdom. We begin at the Stagecoach depot in Winchester. This is where a large batch of former Citybus Leyland Olympians were assembled after their sea crossing from Hong Kong to the UK arriving at Southampton Docks. Some of these buses went to the Caetano factory at Waterloovillle near Portsmouth for work to be carried out prior to their entry into service. Not far from here we see former Citybus Dennis Darts in service with Stagecoach at Havant Bus Station during 2004. We move to London and initially feature a former Citybus Leyland Olympian, filmed in 2003, on the ‘trial’ Megabus Oxford to London service. In London a number of operators acquired many former Hong Kong buses for use on sightseeing tours. Many were converted to open-top for these duties and these are captured on film for you to enjoy. In 2006 we return to Winchester.
Stagecoach had painted six former Citybus Olympians into South West Trains livery for use on Rail Replacement duties. Our cameras followed these buses for a day, as they operated between Winchester and Alton in an environment so different from that in Hong Kong! We complete our programme at what is probably the end of the saga. Due to the introduction of the Disabilities Discrimination Act in the UK almost all former Hong Kong buses can no longer operate in service in the UK apart from on ‘closed’ contract services. BrightBus a company in South Yorkshire, which specialised in school contract services, amassed a large fleet of former Hong Kong buses, as well as some interesting former UK double-deckers. The company closed down in July 2017, so the independent transport videos cameras went to film the buses leaving and returning to their base during their final week of operation. As you will see, this is a fitting end and tribute to another chapter in the world of buses!
