The weekend of 8th-10th March 2024 saw 37403 'Isle of Mull' return to the West Highlands on a tour which included Fort William, Mallaig and Oban. It is thought that it was 1999 when 403 last ran to Fort William, painted in BR Green, making this a monumental return for this Large Logo beast after 25-years - and hauling a delightful blue and grey seven-coach set.
Filmed by multiple cameramen, from the lineside, the hillside, the mountainside and the sky, the tour was followed in some detail, starting on the Friday at Bo'ness itself, behind 27001, right through to the Sunday evening at Glasgow Queen Street. The classic locations of Horseshoe, Loch Awe and Glenfinnan are included plus run rounds, and some truly stunning never-before-seen aerial footage of a 37 and blue/grey stock in the highlands.
On the back of a dreadful wet, windy and wild winter, on the whole, the weather was decent all weekend with the sun even popping out at Mallaig! This may well be Railtour of the Year for 2024 and this is the full story of this historic weekend!
Bonus footage: While 403 was storming away, three other 37s ran on the WHL on this weekend: 37676 light engine and 37175+37254 with a ballast drop. These trains are also included.
