Vienna and Bratislava: They're called twins. Located only 60 kilometers apart, they share a shared history. During the monarchy, there were plans to transform the metropolitan area into one of Europe's strongest economic centers. A total of four railway lines were built between Vienna and Bratislava until 1914, essentially serving as a lifeline. But the dream didn't last long - the collapse of the monarchy, world wars, and finally the Iron Curtain tore the two siblings apart again.

But that's about to change - the existing single-track, non-electrified railway line via Marchegg, with a length of 37.5 kilometers, is to be expanded by 2023. This straightest railway line in all of Austria has also been used in the past for testing high-speed trains. And speed will continue to play a role in the future: The journey from Vienna Central Station to Bratislava will then take only 40 minutes - 25 minutes less than before. Furthermore, the trains will run more frequently.

This Lokorama was created in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Railways, ÖBB, and the Slovak State Railways, ZSR.
