Our fourth DVD presents rare, vintage footage of the golden age of steam. Carefully curated, take a step back in time and watch these forgotten films of Britain's railways brought to life in beautiful detail and expert narration. Watch with or without music.
The Ffestiniog Railway
A true cause célèbre in the 1950s and 1960s, here we showcase some of the locomotives and locations that became so popular as the apparent 'Ffestiniog Miracle' took place and enthusiasts took over a moribund railway, restoring and rebuilding it to become a truly successful railway.
Branches & Byways: BR's LMS Tank Engine Inheritance
The former London, Midland & Scottish Railway gave way to BR's London Midland Region under nationalization and the LMR inherited myriad branch lines across England and Wales as a result. Here we see a number of them in their last days as BR branches, and some of the locomotives which worked them, from L&Y 2-4-2 and Midland 0-4-4 tanks to the Stanier, Fowler, Ivatt, Fairburn and BR tanks that replaced them.
The Bulleid Pacifics of the Southern
Perhaps the most controversial of all British locomotive types produced in quantity were the 140 Pacifics built to the designs of the highly individualistic Oliver Vaughan Snell Bulleid. However, they were to become much appreciated by enthusiasts either in their original air-smoothed or later rebuilt condition. Here they are featured both on home metals and 'abroad'.
LNER steam on 'penetrating lines'
One of the great anachronisms of Britain's railways in 1948 was the overlapping of lines serving towns and cities by different railway companies. It became 'policy' to tidy up the railway map by eliminating or transferring such 'penetrating lines' and here we record lines that had once been part of the LNER network but which were now being run by the London Midland Region.
Also featuring: Western Steam Variety and Scottish railways in the 60s.
