This 73 mile railway across the roof of England contains a remarkable mix of viaducts, tunnels, steep gradients and fine scenery. In the second volume of this series we take a journey along the line from the air and from the lineside starting on the ‘Long Drag’ at Selside and finishing at Culgaith north of Appleby.
The Programme Comprises;
A Journey through the Fells - Starting on the Long Drag at Selside we follow the railway all the way to Appleby and its northern approaches.
Includes views from the air at Selside, Ribblehead Viaduct, Blea Moor, Dentdale, Dent, Rise Hill Tunnel, Garsdale, Ais Gill, Mallerstang, Birkett Common, Kirkby Stephen, Smardale, Crosby Garrett, Appleby and Culgaith.
At each location archive film is used to explore traffic over the years, both passenger and freight.
Class 25, 31s, 47s, 45s and 40s plus steam traction are shown on scheduled passenger services, freights over the years,diverted passenger traffic and special trains.
The 1980s. The rundown of the railway and scenes from a period when the line was threatened with closure.
The Class 31s. Rare film of 31s on passenger services in the 1980s and 1990s.
The Class 47s. The ubiquetous 47s on scheduled passenger and diverted trains throughout the route.
DMUs. On ‘Dalesrail’ services in the 1980s.
The Class 40s. Passenger, freight and specials right up until the end of the class in 1985 plus the pioneer loco D200.
