Cab Ride: Norwich to Leicester via Ely, March, Peterborough, Oakham and Melton Mowbray
This is a cab ride on board Class 57/3, 57310 'Pride of Cumbria' from Norwich Crown Point depot to the UKRL depot Leicester. Operated by ROG, the working here was a light engine move from Derby to Norwich to collect the failed 37608 from Norwich and return it to Leicester for repair.
Filmed in August 2021 this is the return journey which starts at Crown Point depot with the 57 coupling to the 37 and we head for the Breckland Line and Wymondham, running to Ely and taking the freight-only Ely West curve (Ely avoider) onto the Peterborough line. Running via March and then through Peterborough itself, after a short section on the ECML, we pass the yet-to-open remodelled Werrington Junction. Next is Marholm Junction and the line via Oakham and Melton Mowbray to Syston East Junction, with a short run along the MML to Leicester and onto the UKRL depot.
Running over three secondary lines, this is an interesting journey, passing through mile upon mile of open fields and farmland, all wrapped up with a few gradients, viaducts, century-old signal boxes and some lovely semaphore signals plus some tiny and picturesque stations.
The entire 132-mile journey is shown. Includes maps, on-screen captions and minimal narration. A thrash cam in the back cab records the loco at work and ambient sounds.
