Our Digitally Remastered Series are bigger, better and in stunning HD for the very first time! These are the original programmes which have been put through the upscale and remastering treatment with improvements to audio, colour balance, contrast and most of all - picture quality. Some of the trains featured here were never filmed in HD or in broadcast quality. Now, for the first time - you can enjoy just that!
Real steam in China is rapidly dwindling. This film looks at some of the last steam operations, some of which will survive a few years longer.
We start at Meihekou a coal mining railway north of Shenyang with its SY 2-8-2s. Next is Gongwusu near Wuxi a coal mining system using JS class 2-8-2s. Baiyin serves a number of metal smelting plants and associated chemical works. In Shandong Province we cover 3 QJ operated mining systems, the last QJs in service. Moving on there are SYs at another coal mining railway at Beipiao. The Steelworks at Baotou has long been famous for the spectacular night-time slag tipping, with its fiery display. Jalainur's open cast pit is spectacular, but this time we cover the less well known surface lines at spectacularly low temperatures. The Shibanxi narrow gauge railway uses C2 0-8-0s and is a delightful country railway running through unspoilt villages
and farmland.
