Description

In October 1984 well known transport photographer Malcolm King made a visit to Hong Kong to film the buses and other transport with his Super 8 sound cine camera. Now, forty years on in March 2024 he returned to film the bus and tram action in the former British Colony. These films from 1984 are featured in our earlier DVDs numbered D039 and D040. He covered Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, New Territories and Lantau Island filming the buses from all of the major bus operators and some of the smaller ones. We see vehicles operated by Kowloon Motor Bus Company (1933) Limited (KMB), Citybus Limited, Long Win Bus Co. (LWB), Discovery Bay, Mass Transit Railway Corporation, New Lantao Bus Co., Park Island Transport Co. and a number of coach operators. Since the last visit of the independent transport videos cameras in 2018 New World First Bus Ltd. (NWFB) has merged into Citybus and that has resulted in a new livery of mainly yellow with a blue wedge separated with a red band being introduced to both fleets. We still see many former NWFB buses in the familiar green, white and orange livery but with Citybus fleet names. There are still a vast variety of buses to be seen on this special double-disc programme. KMB are introducing electric buses in both double and single-deck form. At the time of his visit we see double-deck BYD B12D/BYD-bodied buses and single-deck BYD12/BYD-bodied buses in a new bright green livery. Citybus are trialling Weisheit VV12HK Hydrogen double-deckers of which our cameraman takes a ride on 59200 (RP 866) and we also see a Weisheit Electric bus 8910 (HR 3878) – both buses are branded as ‘MISSIONZERO’ and carry a dark blue livery with lighter blue and yellow flashes. Also look out for a Wrightbus StreetDeck registered XS 1685 with Sun Bus when he visits Park Island. This is one of only a few StreetDecks in Hong Kong. Sun Bus is a subsidiary of Transport International Holding Ltd., the company that owns KMB and LWB.

This programme has been edited in the way in which Malcolm travelled around, giving a good variety of locations for you to enjoy. On Hong Kong Island some of the places visited include Wan Chai, Central, Kennedy Town, Sai Wan, Ap Lei Chau, Moreton Terrace, Siu Sai Wan, Macau Ferry Bus Terminus, Wah Fu and Stanley. In Kowloon, Cheung Sha Wan, Kwun Tong, Argyle Street, Hung Hom and Mei Foo are places visited. In the New Territories locations visited include Tseung Kwan O, Ma On Shan, Tai Po Market, Tuen Mun and at the KMB Tuen Chek Depot at Chek Lap Kok where we see up to one hundred brand new Enviro500 and Volvo/MCV double-deckers in the original KMB red and cream livery all lined up awaiting service. These buses will be the last diesel buses to enter service with KMB. Filming also takes place at Park Island and Lantau Island including some interesting footage at the busy Hong Kong International Airport bus station. So take your seats for a tour of Hong Kong 40 years on from our cameraman’s original visit in 1984.
