At the start of 2022, Merseyrail was operating a total 56 class 507 and 508 EMUs. In May, 508143 went for scrap and at the time, this was thought to be the beginning of the end. Instead, with further delays to the introduction of the 777s, numerous 507s received life-extension overhauls and the summer of 2022 turned out to be a bonus - the old units remained in service - all of them!
Given one very last opportunity to film them, the idea of this programme was to record all 55 units working in normal passenger service across the eight Merseyrail lines in the year 2022. Add some of the more interesting locations, a bit of history, add some unusual moves and here we have it… all of them, presented in numerical order!
Other than a few advert liveries, all the sets are identical but unique in their own way and this programme pays tribute to their four decades of service to the city of Liverpool and its suburbs.
Bonus footage: From new there were 33 x 507s and 43 x 508s. A look at what happened to the other 21 units - from Connex and Silverlink to store, scrap, barrier vehicle and fire training coaches.
