Our second programme on Lisbon's trams features the world famous route No.28. It is said that on a typical journey on a busy day - such is the popularity of these iconic four-wheel 90-year old vehicles - the tram is photographed or filmed more than one thousand times, and this may well be true - see for yourself!
Route 28 has featured heavily over the years but this is probably the most detailed account of a journey ever produced. Filmed from the roadside, on board and from the front, you can appreciate this magnificent journey to full affect as the tram snakes, weaves and battles its way from Martim Moniz to Prazeres, climbing gradients and squeezing through narrow streets, whilst avoiding road traffic, crazy tuk-tuks and lost tourists!
The journey is compiled from a number of visits to Lisbon during 2023 and includes multi-car run pasts, a breakdown, and some rare moves at Estrela plus night time footage.
The anniversary of Carris is celebrated each year in September, with a tram parade which usually involves most of the operational museum cars, running from Santo Amaro through the city centre and back - and this is normally the only time in the year when many of these cars run. The 2023 event was different, as due to the overrunning road works in the city, the parade ran to Alges and back instead
This is definitely the lesser-seen part of Lisbon's tramway for these vehicles and in two parades, ten trams were used: 283, 444, 1, 330, 535, 802, 744, 745 and 713 plus buses 301 and 1001 and brand-new tram 601. Filmed from the roadside and on board, enjoy the best of Lisbon's museum fleet in action, and some rare track, on a baking hot summer's day!
