The North of England once possessed a fascinating network of Branches. There were busy tourist lines serving the Lakes along with quiet branches. There was also an important link across the Pennines. This programme explores these lines using archive film from the era of British Railways.

Across the Northern Lakes The line from Penrith to Keswick using archive film taken in the last years of operation with the intermediate stations, terminus and lineside views. Includes the ‘Lakes Express’. Cross Country to Kirkby Stephen. The line from Penrith through Appleby East and Warcop to Kirkby Stephen in the years before closure. The intermediate stations are featured from various viewpoints in the 1950s & in 1960. Includes a look at the branch in the 1970s and 1980s with freight and excursion traffic. Serving the Southern Lakes. The lines to Windermere and Windermere Lakeside plus the freight line to Sandside. Lines around Lancaster with the branch to Wennington and the ‘Little North Western’. The Alston Branch. The line from Haltwhistle to Alston using unpublished archive film taken around 1967 with a variety of ‘green’ DMUs.
