Description

Welcome to this very special DVD programme celebrating a milestone of bus travel on the Isle of Wight.  The Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum put on a special event over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of October 2021 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first bus service on the Isle of Wight operated by the Vectis Bus Company.  The first public bus services began on 24th October 1921.  There were three routes and these were Newport (Market Square) to West Cowes (Police Station); West Cowes (Park Gates) to Gurnard (Tinkers Lane); Newport to East Cowes (Ferry Square).  A further service from Ryde to Newport was introduced a few weeks later.

To celebrate this momentous event the Museum organised a tour of these routes using three special vehicles, 405 (DL 9015), a 1934 Dennis Ace with Harrington B20F bodywork, 216 (FDL 676), a 1949 Bedford OB with a Duple C29F body from the Museum and ‘The Old Girl’ – 702 (CDL 899) the 1939 Bristol K5G with an ECW O56R body which is still owned and operated by its original operator, Southern Vectis (Go South Coast) which was formed from the erstwhile Vectis Bus Company when it was acquired by the Southern Railway in 1929.  The Vectis Bus Company's red and blue livery then changed to the green of the railway company – a colour still used to this day.

To mark the event the independent transport videos cameras were on hand to record the event for posterity.  So we are treating you to a ‘cab ride’ onboard ‘The Old Girl’ over the first routes operated by the Vectis Bus Company.  You will see the driver’s eye view of almost the entire tour of the routes – over two hours!  A second camera will give you the passenger’s experience from both the upper and lower deck of this venerable old bus belying its 82 years in service.

We have included a description of the routes, written by Richard Newman, in the DVD case to give you details of the routes which are: Route 1 – Ryde to East Cowes, Route 2 - East Cowes to Newport, Route 3 – Newport to West Cowes, Route 4 – Cowes to Gurnard and Route 5 - Newport to Ryde.  At the end of the tour we return to the Bus Museum after a most enjoyable ride over this part of the Isle of Wight.  We hope you enjoy the experience!
