Sunrise Sunset UK spends a full day at a busy and popular location, recording a typical day of passenger and freight trains.
In railway terms, Eastleigh needs little introduction. With a huge works, numerous yards and an almost non-stop flow of passenger and freight passing through the station, it's a popular longstanding location for enthusiasts and the ideal place to spend a full day.
Filmed on a fine sunny day in June 2024, action starts at sunrise with overnight diverted freight coming in via Romsey before a constant flow of Class 444 and 450 EMUs, plus 158s and 220/221 Voyagers.
In the east yard, two Class 08 shunters are kept busy most of the day, marshalling trains arriving and departing and tripping wagons to the virtual quarry.
Running to/from the Southampton terminals, container trains are the main flow - mostly stopping for a crew change - and these are operated by Freightliner, GBRf and DB Cargo. At this time, Class 70s were dominant hauling these heavy trains with the usual variety of 66s. 59201 is a highlight plus 56094 and 69004 and with stone trains, car trains and engineers trains, there's a lot to see. Filmed from three locations.
