In May 1996, a tour was organised visiting the last steam operated routes on the Romanian CFF narrow gauge system. These 76 cm gauge lines were built to convey timber from the country's vast forest reserves in and around the Carpathian Mountains. Most were laid in remote valleys and many were inaccessible by road.
The systems visited include Borsec, Cimpu-Cetati, Moldovita, Tismana, Viseu de Sus and Covasna Comandau. Locomotives are the standard CFF 0-8-0 tanks, plus both Krauss 4-6-0 and 0-6-0 tanks. Highlights include the Siclau inclined plane, cable shunting and the stunning mountain scenery.
David Joyce was able to record the last days at Cimpu- Cetati and Borsec which both closed immediately after the tour ran.
