Description

Built on the River Clyde in Scotland and launched in 1934 RMS Queen Mary was one of the largest and fastest liners in the world. Designed for Cunard's two-ship weekly transatlantic service between Southampton and New York, the ship set new standards in luxury and broke countless records. She was the ship that helped lift a nation out of recession and a ship that influenced the course of the Second World War.

In peacetime almost every passenger list featured an array of glamourous stars, heads of state or royalty, yet the liner also carried umpteen European immigrants seeking new lives in the US.

After 31 years of service the liner sailed for Long Beach, California to begin a new career as a floating hotel and attraction. She now has a unique place in world history: the last surviving transatlantic 'superliner'.

This is the extended and updated story of Queen Mary, originally made for BBC Television. The film won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Popular Factual Programme.

Contains original interviews and rare rediscovered archive footage.

The programme is written and produced by award-winning documentary film-maker David Ellery.
