Cab ride: Preston Docks to Lindsey Oil Refinery.
This is a cab ride from Preston to Lindsey via Blackburn, Copy Pit, Wakefield, Hemsworth, Hatfield & Stainforth and Barnetby, filmed on a fine sunny day in July 2015.
Starting from the docks at Preston, this is the 6E32 bitumen oil tank empties, and passing over Strand Road level crossing, we climb the 1 in 29 incline and onto the WCML.
The train itself is made up of 13 TEA bogie tanks and this thrice-weekly train is one of the freight highlights of Lancashire and Yorkshire. Running west/east during the day, the train passes many scenic and interesting railway locations as well as taking a few freight-only lines and curves.
Leaving the WCML at Lostock we head east to Blackburn and then via Copy Pit to the Calder Valley line, Hebden Bridge and Mirfield. Passing the remains of Healey Mills yard we pass Wakefield and join the Leeds-Doncaster mainline. At Ardwick Junction we run onto the freight-only Skellow line through to Hatfield & Stainforth and then it's possibly the best part of the journey as we pass the huge steel mill at Scunthorpe and over various bridges and viaducts. Next is Wrawby Junction and Barnetby and we see the numerous and soon-to-be-replaced semaphore signals and signal boxes before running on to the freight-only branch at Ulceby through to Lindsey Oil Refinery.
The train is hauled by 60095, one of Colas Railfreight's recently overhauled and reinstated Class 60s.
BONUS FOOTAGE: Light engine move from Lindsey Oil Refinery to Immingham Eastern Jetty Sidings.
Filmed with the full assistance of Colas Railfreight, the entire journey is shown. A special ‘thrash cam’ in the back cab records the locomotive in full effect. Part narration, on-screen captions and maps.
