10 YEARS - 50 CAB RIDES...!
Featuring 31601, 37800+37884, 56091, 56303 and 31452+31601.
Between 2010 and 2020, more than 50 cab rides in the "Riding the…" series were produced. Filmed as far apart as Inverness and Dawlish, Holyhead and Hastings, with locos ranging from Class 20s to Class 70s, a lot of railway has been covered!
This special compilation features locos working hard on the various gradients countrywide, featuring Class 31, 37 and 56 locos.
31601: On the Highland Main Line we tackle Drumocther summit with 15 miles of 1 in 95 and 1 in 80 from Newtonmore, in snow and sunshine!
56091: Grid thrash in the Chilterns on board 56091 from High Wycombe with 1,700 tons of spoil on the 1 in 164 climb to Saunderton summit.
37800+37884: The 'Thrash Bash' tour from 2016 was probably the railtour of year. In the Malvern Hills, the 1 in 80 slog from Bransford Road to Colwall tunnel; on the Welsh Marches, from a standing start at Tram Inn, 13 miles, as much as 1 in 100, to Llanviangel; and up the famous 1 in 37 Lickey - before the wires! The train load was 10 coaches and a Class 47 on the back!
31452+31601: With 1,500 tons of ballast, the 31s work hard on the 1 in 162 climb from Elemsthorpe towards Hinckley; then the 1 in 125/132 slog from Nuneaton to Stockingford Tunnel, finally the only real gradient on the southern part of the WCML, the 1 in 333 climb from Leighton Buzzard to (almost) Tring.
56303: A Grid on a rake of empty bogie boxes from Shap along the northern sections of the WCML, thrashing down Shap(!) and Preston to Leyland.
