Bury • Rochdale • Ashton

Our second programme on Manchester's Metrolink looks at three routes, serving the north and east of the city.

The line to Bury was the first modern light rail line in Britain, rebuilt from the former heavy rail line, opening in 1992. As it was the first, much of the former railway infrastructure remains, with many stations retaining original buildings and fixtures. Today, the Bury line is one of Metrolink's busiest routes with a six minute headway for most of the day. Footage comes from various locations along the line, including Heaton Park and its tunnels, trams terminating at Crumpsall and the depot at Queens Road.

The line to Oldham and Rochdale was part of Metrolink's Phase 3a, opening in stages between 2012 and 2014. Although this route was also rebuilt from heavy rail, other than former track beds and over bridges, very little remains, with all stations completely rebuilt to the standard Metrolink design and/or relocated. Again, almost all of the line is featured, from street running in Oldham and Rochdale, Shaw and Crompton turn-backs, tram v train at Newton Heath and the impressive viaduct at Central Park.

Known as the East Manchester line, the full route to Ashton-under-Lyne was completed in 2013 and runs on a mixture of reserved track and on-street sections, plus a section of former heavy rail. With an intermediate service to the Etihad Campus, the service in the core area is again every six minutes. Footage includes the unusual turn-back move at Velopark, various dive unders and the old railway alignment.
