Description

The Delivering The Goods series takes an in-depth look at the operations of Britain's rail freight companies in the 21st Century.

Volume 2 focuses on Direct Rail Services, a company set up initially to run the nuclear flask traffic, but which later moved into the wider commercial market. The policy of buying older 'classic' locos made DRS an instant favourite with enthusiasts, but it is the investment in Class 66 that has enabled the company to grow its Anglo-Scottish intermodal traffic.

This review of DRS operations covers the many varied and highly interesting flows resulting from the company's expansion since it was formed.

Highlights include:

  • Nuclear flask trains, including 20901 & 20902 at Durham, 37029 & 33207 on the Durham coast, a 47, 37 & 20 combo at Kensington Olympia, quintuple-headed 37s at Harrow, plus trains on the Sizewell and Dungerness branches
  • The nitric acid train with 20s and 37s
  • Intermodal services, including 37s on the Malcolm train, the Purfleet flow, GBRf 66s on loan and, of course, the Tesco train
  • 33025 & 33030 on the mini-modal test run
  • 87s being delivered to Carlisle and an 87 working an intermodal with a 66
  • Visits to Kingmoor and Crewe Gresty Bridge depots
  • Class 66s coming off lease
  • 37s on a variety of Network Rail trains, including 37059 & 37069 deputising for the Network Rail HST
  • 37423 with saloon Caroline at Stenson
  • A pair of 20s on a saloon at Dawdon
  • The Haverton Hill 'flats' train with 37s and 47s, and the first run with 66s
  • The rare 6C66 to Hull with top & tail 37s
  • Passenger turns, railtours, guesting at preserved railways, working in East Anglia and the Grand Central training runs
  • RHTT trains all over the country with 20s, 37s, 57s and 66s.

All this and plenty more will keep you entertained and bring you fully up-to-speed with the DRS story.
