Description

A Visit to Beamish, The Living Museum of the North: Beamish Museum is situated near Gateshead, a circular tram route links the various parts of the museum together, often running in both directions from the main entrance. This visit, in October 2023, trams were running the clockwise service and heritage buses were running anti-clockwise. Beamish has its own fleet of buses, supplemented on this occasion by guest buses. Vintage cars and commercial vehicles can also be seen, plus steam lorries, traction engines and road rollers. A couple of the Beamish steam railways were also in action.

Buses & Trains in Sunderland: Bus services in Sunderland are provided by Go North East and Stagecoach North East. The Tyne & Wear Metro also runs through Sunderland on the way to South Hylton. This chapter includes a visit to the Nexus Learning Centre in South Shields where one of the new Stadler Class 555 trains was on display, a large number of these trains have been delivered in 2024 and are expected to replace the Metrocars in 2025.

Buses in Filey & Scarborough: Bus services in Filey and Scarborough are mainly provided by East Yorkshire Buses, part of the Go-Ahead group. The town services in Scarborough carry the 'Scarborough Locals' fleet name. Competition on the Scarborough seafront and Scarborough - Filey routes is provided by Shoreline Suncruiser Buses Ltd. who also have school contracts in the area. Arriva North East operate into Scarborough from Whitby and Middlesbrough. East Yorkshire at present have two garages in Scarborough, there are plans to build a new garage to replace both these garages.

The Central Tramway Company Cliff Lift: This cliff lift was built in 1881, it is also one of the two surviving funiculars out of the five that have operated in Scarborough. The line is standard gauge and 248 feet long, originally steam powered, it was converted to electricity in 1920 using power from the town tramway system, when that closed in 1931, the line was converted to AC and a new motor was installed. The present day carriages date from 1975.

The Scarborough North Bay Railway: This 20" gauge miniature railway opened in 1931 and runs for 7/8 mile from Peasholm Park to Scalby Mills which is adjacent to the Sealife Centre on the North Bay. The line has four steam outline diesel hydraulic locomotives built in 1931 - 1933 by Hudswell Clarke of  Leeds. Two of the locomotives, nos. 1931 and 1932, were built for the railway, the other two, nos, 1933 and 570, were originally built for the railway in Golden Park in Leeds. Since this closed they were used at several other railways, finally ending up in Scarborough in 2006.
