Description

The period between 1975 and 1995 saw significant changes to the railways of Scotland, with the closure of many freight lines and branches that served various collieries, power stations and whisky distilleries. While many of these lines have been consigned to history, a few have been reopened as passenger lines in the 21st century.

The author visited Scotland on several occasions between the 1970s and the 1990s, during which time he took the opportunity to capture many soon to be unrepeatable images of now closed lines and withdrawn locomotive classes.

This book is divided into chapters covering each area of Scotland, starting with Aberdeen, Inverness and the north and finishing with Edinburgh and Millerhill, a major hump yard located in the South East Edinburgh suburbs whose site now houses an EMU depot. Also covered within this book are areas around Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Fife, the Central Belt, Ayrshire and South West Scotland.

Scottish Freight Branch Lines and Byways 1975-1995 provides a fascinating snapshot of freight traffic in Scotland during this period.
