Description

Worksop in Nottinghamshire has always been an important centre for the railway, ever since the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway arrived in the town in 1849.

Situated 15 miles from both Sheffield and Doncaster, and 25 miles from Nottingham, Worksop was served by both the Great Central and Midland Railways in the days of steam, and in later years became the focal point of the region’s coal traffic, servicing the many collieries and industry in the area.

This first volume looks in detail at the former Great Central Railway line between Sheffield Victoria and Gainsborough Central, together with the Clarborough Junction to Sykes Junction route, which was included in the original plans for a line between Sheffield and Lincoln.

Local author and railway historian, Chris Booth, worked as a signaller at Worksop for over 40 years and has drawn on extensive research and his own unique insight into Worksop’s railways to produce this volume.

Chris is our guide to the many changes that have occurred on these routes through the years. Over 400 illustrations show many locations through the lenses of photographers spanning many decades, from steam days through to modern diesels (and electrics!).
