Special Nostalgia Edition - The Life & Times of: 5, 622, 636, 644, 680, 702, 717, 761
On 6th December 2024, with just a month of the Illuminations to go, Blackpool Transport suspended their Heritage tram operation. With the 'Blackpool Christmas Express' tram tours all cancelled, private hires and no Illuminations tours, the company lost tens of thousands of pounds in revenue. The decision was very poorly received, drawing the attention of local MPs and making the national news. Now, as of spring 2025, it's all over: all the old trams have been put into store and almost all the staff used for the maintenance and operation of them have been made redundant - while at the same time, millions of pounds is being spent on replacing the almost-new buses with more new buses! It's not the first time that overtly negative things have happened to Blackpool's trams, but this is definitely the worst. The full story is told here.
The life and times of eight trams: OMO 5 from a Railcoach and Permanent way car to OMO and into preservation; 622 and its famous Tigerrific advert, through the 1980s and 1990s into 2006 and more adverts, sold and used as a classroom, scrapped in January 2025; 636 and its quadruple roof boxes from the 1970s, Warburtons advert, Metro line 14 livery and a test tram; 644, probably most famous for crashing through the sea wall at Gynn Square, ran on the last day in 2011, sold to Farmer Parrs, scrapped January 2025; 680, towing a trailer and five advert liveries, running at Beamish and Heaton Park, latterly back in Blackpool; 702, a very ordinary Balloon car, ran in 75th parade and was the last Balloon from Fleetwood on the last night in 2009, now at Heaton Park; 717 and its 1930s restoration in 2008, now the flagship double decker of the Heritage fleet and 761, from Balloon 725, stored, rebuilt, the first Jubilee car in 1979, many advert liveries, ran on the last day in 2011, sold and now back in Blackpool.
