Sunrise Sunset 16 – A Day at Crewe including the Independent Lines.

Crewe is a long-standing, traditional, and popular railway location with a rich history. However, in more recent years, with most of the freight passing on the independent lines, fewer loco-hauled trains and the closure of the diesel depot as we once knew it, there hasn't been as much interest.

Forward to 2026 and Crewe has once again become a railway 'hotspot' thanks mostly to the full introduction of Class 67-hauled Cardiff - Manchester trains, the new Class 730s, 805s and 807s, plus the 197s and from May 2026, the Lumo 222s. With the LSL depot in full view, on any day, you're likely to see something more exotic! Add a handful of freights that pass through or run round and a mixed bag of other EMUs and DMUs - the traction variety is pretty decent.

Our chosen day turned out to be a classic with a superb mixture of locos and units! Starting with a Class 60 and 37s on an IM train, 92s work the Caledonian Sleepers and at first light and 89001 passes through, light engine to Carlisle! 67s head from the depot into service, three sets are featured. Avanti's new 805s and 807s are seen in abundance with 197s now working all local services for ATW. 10-car 730s work to/from Euston and 4 & 8-car 350s also seen.

Only a few Cross Country services are routed via Crewe with 220s and 221s, Lumo's 222s call and pass through, 323s & 331s work Manchester local services, with 170s now working to Derby, Nottingham and all stations to Lincoln! For LSL, BR blue 08631 is shunting around the depot, 89001 is back with the Chairman's train, then 90001 arrives in from Euston!

Very few freight trains pass through the station during the day so action comes from the Independent lines, with trains to/from Basford Hall yard towards Manchester and Liverpool, worked by 66s, 88s, 90s and a bit of history in the making, the first regular Class 93 - 93009 - working for DRS. The evening is dominated by two DCR 60s hauling stone trains to/from Penmaenmawr Quarry. Things don't quite go as planned, adding more interest! All in all, a superb day - filmed in glorious sunshine!
