Description

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of passenger trains on the Ffestiniog Railway, this product showcases all the action from the fantastic four-day event held in June 2025, marking the seventieth anniversary of restored passenger services on the line. From 19th to 22nd June 2025, the railway hosted a variety of historic locomotives, authentic train formations, and special workings – including the impressive ‘200 Wheels over The Cob’ cavalcade.

Across the weekend, over 20 steam locomotives and various diesel locomotives hauled a range of services. This product features both steam and diesel hauled trains at a wide range of locations between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Day Zero: 19th June 2025
Ahead of the main event, the opportunity was taken to re-enact the very first train run of 23rd July 1955. Simplex ‘Mary Ann’, paired with Carriage 23 and Van 12, hauled shuttles across the Cob to Boston Lodge, the limit of the original passenger services. Footage from Thursday 19th June includes ‘Taliesin’ on works trains, the first of the weekend’s ‘Sunset Specials’, as well as the scheduled ‘Mountain Spirit’ and ‘Woodland Wanderer’ services.

Day One: 20th June 2025
With an intensive timetable, day 1 of the event featured both ‘Prince’ and ‘Merddin Emrys’ now appearing in ‘Garraway Green’, paired appropriately with the matching 1960’s green vintage stock. There was a rare opportunity for Quarry Hunslets ‘Hugh Napier’ and ‘Britomart’ to haul a passenger service to Blaenau Ffestiniog and various diesel locomotives hauling goods trains.

Day Two: 21st June 2025
The second day of the main event featured an early morning goods train to Blaenau Ffestiniog, hauled by Merddin Emrys as part of the ‘Rail 200’ celebrations – the wagons in the consist totalled 200 wheels. Other highlights included double-headed Ladies, ‘Blanche’ and ‘Linda’, along with run-pasts and simultaneous departures from Dduallt Station.

Day Three: 22nd June 2025
The final day of the event focused on the ‘200 Wheels on The Cob’ cavalcade – a tremendous spectacle showcasing the impressive collection of steam locomotives the railway has to offer. Appearing in the order in which they operated services on the line, the cavalcade featured: Prince, Merddin Emrys, Linda, Blanche, Britomart, Mountaineer, Chaloner, Earl of Merioneth, David Lloyd George, Palmerston, Velinheli, Lilla, NG/G16 No.143, Taliesin, Russell, K1, NG/G16 No.87, Lyd, Hugh Napier, Princess, Welsh Pony, NG/G16 No.130, James Spooner, NG15 No.134, and the C2. Footage includes a variety of angles from the cavalcade itself, along with scenes from morning and afternoon services.

Extensive footage from across the event is featured, covering a variety of locations along the 13½ mile route between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog. A selection of aerial clips are also included, showcasing the picturesque scenery of North Wales.

This product features no commentary, allowing you to fully appreciate the sound of the steam locomotives working hard. Short titles are included throughout informing you of the date, locomotive and location.
