Section 1: Manchester to Bury
On departing Manchester Victoria we race a Class 142 DMU before diving under and passing over former Cheetham Hill sidings. Our first stop is Woodlands Road but from Besses-o’-th’-Barn we join the driver’s cab until terminating. At Bury another service departs.
Section 2: Bury to Manchester
At Bury a service is joined for our return, stopping at all stops until terminating at Manchester Victoria.
Section 3: The Last Day of Operation
Friday 16th August 1991 is the last day of British Rail passenger operation on the line. Due to Metro engineering work in the last few weeks, the rail service actually starts at Crumpsall with a bus connect from Manchester Victoria. We witness the special working and ride a 504 with “Headboard” to Bury and back.
Section 4: The Day After the Last Day
On Saturday 17th August 1991 at Bury depot the remaining 504 units are being prepared for removal. We see 31306 building the four sets into a train and then see the stock departing, leaving an empty site.
Section 5: The 503 Farewell Railtour
Saturday 13th April 1985 is the RCTS/LCGB The Class 503 Farewell Railtour. Firstly we visit 503s at Birkenhead before joining the tour at Rock Ferry. A photo stop is made at Hoylake! Paradise Junction before a reverse at Liverpool Central. Break at Southport and to Steamtown.
