A profile of the BR Standard Pacifics. This programme provides an authoritative account of the last Express designs from the great days of working steam. The Britannias were the flagships of British Railways Standard Designs. From 1951 to 1953 a total of 55 of this reliable and sturdy design entered traffic.

In this programme we explore and show these powerful Pacifics at work throughout the network.

The Design and Development of the Britannias:
The building programme with film of 70000 and various other members of the class to 70054.

The Britannias in Traffic:
Showing the class in action around the country - including the Liverpool Street to Norwich line - on the 'Golden Arrow' - on the Western Region - in Scotland and throughout the London Midland region.

The Last Months:
With film of the class hard at work on passenger and freight traffic on the Settle & Carlisle and over Shap in 1967.
70013 is also featured during 1968 on specials in the North West.

Britannias in Preservation:
With 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' at Bressingham and 70000 'Britannia' on the main line.
