Crewe Works was established in the 1840s and expanded to become one of the biggest railway workshops in the World, turning out an impressive range of steam, electric and diesel motive power. This programme traces its history and locomotive designs using archive film.
Origins: The development of the works from the 1840s.
The London and North Western Railway and the growth of the works into the 20th Century. Includes locomotive building including the LNWR 8 coupled designs.
Grouping: The changes and development of the works with the formation of the LMS and the production of the ‘Princess’ and ‘Coronation’ Pacifics.
The Steam Sheds: Crewe South Shed.
Nationalisation: Crewe Works in the British Railways era and the production of the Standard designs and Modern Traction.
The Open Days of 1960, 1987, 2000 and 2005. Extensive archive film shows the locomotives on display alongside the traverser and inside the workshops plus in action on special trains. A wide range of steam, electric and diesel traction is featured from Stanier Pacifics to Black 5s, Class 40s, Class 20s and shunters.
