Description

The Classic German-design of the Class 218 diesels has been a familiar part of the rail scene for over 30 years since the demise of mainline steam. Today the class has been much reduced in numbers as modernisation sweeps through the country confining the Class to ever-decreasing duties and areas of operation. The throaty engines of this class have made them a firm favourite with railfans across Europe and it is through the lens of well-travelled enthusiast Richard Scott, that we take a look at the class at work between 2005 and 2008. Not only do we witness Class 218s, but we also feature Class 215, 216 and 225 at work on a variety of duties.

The former territory of West Germany is where the majority of the class can be found working and we cover services in the South around Bavaria, with operations seen at Munich, Ulm, Friedrichshafen, Immenstadt and Lindau. We also see commuter services out of Frankfurt, Heilbronn and Mannheim. The majority of scenes have been specifically chosen for their noise as locomotives are heard working hard, both on the platform and from on-board the various trains - definitely one to warn the neighbours about!

Our journey continues as we travel up the steeply-graded Emmelshausen branch out of the Rhine Valley, we also cover commuter lines in the Rhur Valley as well the routes East of Hannover towards Goslar. Some of the most famous Class 218 territory is also featured as we visit routes from Hamburg to Westerland and out to Lübeck.

This programme is an historic account of this popular German locomotive design, now very much on the decline as their career draws to a close.
