At 392 miles in length, the East Coast Mainline from Kings Cross to Edinburgh needs little introduction. With a fascinating and extensive history of express passenger trains, local services and goods, plus depots, yards and some of the finest steam and diesel locomotives to ever run in Britain, the ECML has been a mecca for enthusiasts for decades and these five featured archive titles, show the line at its very best.

Marsden Rail 32: King's Cross to York (MR032 - 70 minutes)
Starting at King's Cross in the early 1960s, with ex-LNER 'Pacific's' still working mainline services. Views in the station are complemented by fascinating film taken between 1944 and 1963 at King's Cross Depot. Heading north, Hitchin, Biggleswade and Sandy are shown before arrival at Peterborough, with film taken between 1948 and 1964 showing an immense range of steam classes. Doncaster between 1945 and 1965 shows the station, depot and works.

Marsden Rail 33: York to Newcastle (MR033 - 65 minutes)
This programme continues northward on the ECML and features several branch and secondary lines that served the York to Newcastle route. The first location is York, with film taken between 1945 and 1965 illustrating why the city held such an attraction for railway enthusiasts. Even in the early 1960s, an immense variety of motive power could be found with expresses headed by ex-LNER ‘Pacifics’.

Marsden Rail 39: York and the North East (MR039 - 76 minutes)
Heading along the ECML and Darlington where the station, MPD and Works yard are featured, as well as operations at some of the large industrial sites around the town and which used privately-owned locomotives. Durham is next for a journey to Bishop Auckland and then up the coast towards Sunderland, with views of the coal traffic on both the main line and colliery branches.

Archive Series Volume 4: North From Newcastle (CR004 - 64 minutes)
Covering primarily the 1930s, 60s and 70s, the programme starts at Newcastle Central Station in 1931, with a wide variety of ex-North Eastern Railway locos. A brakevan trip from Morpeth and Widdrington complement film taken in 1965 of the branches to Hepscott and Alnwick. After Berwick and Tweedmouth, the Scottish Border is crossed and unique, mainly colour sequences, shot between 1938 and 1956 feature fully streamlined A4s, NER Atlantics, V2s, a steam railcar and others. Post-war footage of D49s, plus an A3 in experimental blue livery is complemented by film of diesel Class 26s and 40s shortly after their introduction.

The Railways Of Scotland Volume Three: Edinburgh  (CR103 - 59 minutes)
Edinburgh boasted an intricate network of suburban and freight lines until the closures of the 1960s. In this programme, many of those long closed lines and stations are featured, from the impressive Princes Street Station to outlying stations such as Slateford and Portobello. Recorded at a wide variety of locations, many classes of steam locomotive are shown at work. The transition to diesel traction is also well documented with 'Deltic', Type '4', Sulzer 'Type 2' and 'Clayton' locomotives prominent. To the north West of Edinburgh lies the famous Forth Railway Bridge, opened in 1890 with footage of a ferry crossing from North Queensferry.
