On Thursday 4th August 2022 the iconic yellow painted buses that have graced the streets of the seaside town of Bournemouth for the past 120 years came to an abrupt end. The bus company that operated as Yellow Buses went into administration on Friday 29th July 2022. On the following Wednesday, 3rd August, the company announced that they would be running a Saturday service over most of their routes, but then the news broke that the buses would cease operating at the close of service on the following day, Thursday 4th August 2022.

This DVD programme follows the final days of these buses, filming them for a historic record for the people of Bournemouth and bus enthusiasts that have followed these buses over the years. independent transport videos have filmed a number of video programmes over the past twenty-five years featuring the Yellow Buses in Bournemouth, having completed a review of the buses and services in 2021. We were about to undertake a similar 2022 review when we started filming at the beginning of July 2022 at Christchurch along the High Street and Castle Street unaware of what would be happening by the end of the month! This is where our programme begins and also includes a shot of ‘Buster’s New Forest Explorer’ bus in Ringwood on 27th July, just a few days before that service was withdrawn for good. So, on Monday 1st August our cameras were in central Bournemouth to record the action, starting at Gervis Place where most of the services pass through. Further locations include Exeter Road, Westover Road and Bath Road. More action is captured adjacent to Bournemouth railway station and at the Travel Interchange. Our next outing is on the final day of operations, Thursday 4th August. There was an air of melancholy in the town as the Yellow Buses ran in service for the very last time. It seemed that they were going to go out in style, with plenty of buses in service giving the travelling public in Bournemouth happy memories of their former bus company.

Our filming begins in Westover Road and moves onto Gervis Place where there is plenty of action. We then continue along Old Christchurch Road and returning to Gervis Place and along Westover Road again to Bath Road where the buses are seen as they start their run along the sea front. Early afternoon sees our cameras in the High Street in Christchurch and we then film the buses as they drive over the pretty bridge above the River Avon in Castle Street. Late afternoon filming moves back to Bournemouth railway station as by now news has come that the buses will finish services at 19.00hrs. As most of the buses filmed have completed their duties and are returning to the depot with friendly waves from the drivers and horns sounding as they move away. We then take our final ride on a Yellow Bus in service as we board 5071 (BX62 FNV), a Wright Eclipse Gemini 2-bodied Volvo B9TL on its final service 4 toward Bournemouth Pier. At Gervis Place we see Streetlight 3038 stopping to let it’s passengers alight for the final time and then we film a convoy of three double-deckers, 5093, 5071 and 5065 horns sounding as they drive through and leave the centre of Bournemouth for the very last time.

Our cameras move to the Yellow Buses depot on Yeomans Way to see most of the buses returning for the final time. ADL Enviro400 4011 (SN12 AVY) had the dubious honour of being the very last Yellow Bus to enter the depot ending 120 years of yellow buses in Bournemouth. Go South Coast (morebus) stepped in the following day to cover most of the former Yellow Bus services with a variety of buses. Eastleigh independent bus operator Xelabus is now operating the tendered services and has taken over the Yellow Coaches operation. National Express has acquired the former Yellow Buses depot and maintenance facilities for their local coaching operations.
