Description

Switzerland has two rack lines which are predominantly steam-operated.

The Brienz Rothern Bahn, to 800mm gauge, opened in 1892, is a commercial enterprise operating the world's most modern steam locomotives. The Furka Bergstrecke (Furka Mountain Section) AG is a preservation society running steam trains over the most mountainous section of the metre gauge Furka Oberalp Bahn, closed after completion of the 15.4km Furka Basistunnel in 1992.

Both lines use the double Abt rack and traverse spectacular countryside. The 7.596km of the BRB are graded at 1 in 4 (25%), climbing 1678m (5505 feet) to the summit of the Rothorn, the tallest mountain in the vicinity, at 2350 metres (7710 feet). The Furka line, route of the famous Glacier Express, has a ruling grade of 1 in 8, and some adhesion sections. Of the 17.7km between Overwald and Realp, 12.9k , from Realp to Gletsch, have been reopened. The trains are hauled by SLM built 2-6-0 rack and adhesion locomotives repatriated from Vietnam which have to work hard up the ruling 1 in 8 gradients, cross the famous Steffenbach bridge, which is folded away during the annual winter closure.

Half of this DVD includes Brienz Rothorn Bahn , previously available on Video & DVD, but now withdrawn.
