Description
Switzerland has been described as a theme park for railway enthusiasts. Part of its irresistible charm lies in the vast network of narrow gauge railways, virtually all of which are in private hands. Thirty-four of these are shown in this programme, many with their associated systems. The scenery they run through range from undulating green countryside to deep mountain snow.
The narrowest of the gauges, the 750mm Waldenburgbahn features along with it's 0-6-0T steam locomotive, scenes that could have been filmed 75 years ago. From the city, in that of the BLT in Berne, short lines such as the less than 2km Bergbahn Rheineck-Walzenhausen with it's 600 volt and unusual 1200mm gauge rack operation over 25% grades and one railcar, to the longer route of the 60km Apenzellerbahn are all filmed. From the famous Jungfraubahn to the little known Trogenerbahn, visit all of these accompanied by an informative and authoritative historical narrative.
From steam to steeple cabs, from the MOB to the mobile library, the diversity and gems contained in this programme will probably leave you wanting to visit some of these Swiss Narrow Gauge Private Railways.
